SonofZeusandHera,Areswasappointedgodofwar.Hewasterribleandmajestic,andhismarchshooktheworld.OfallthemajorgodsatOlympus,hewasthemosthateful,lovingstruggleandwarandeverthirstyforblood.Ontheotherhandhesignifiedcourageandvictoryinbattle,andwasdevoutlyworshippedbysoldiersgoingtowar.Prayerswereaddressedtohimbeforethewarandspoilspresentedathisaltarafterit.
Hewastheonegodwhoeverhadtosubmittothepowerofhisinferiors.Atonetimelackoftactandgoodudgementledtohisshame.Hewasfightingwithtwogiants,andfindinghimselfnomatchforthetwomonstrouscreatures,laiddownhisarmsandwasimprisonedinchains.HewassetfreeintheendbytheartfulHermes,butnotbeforehehadsufferedallthehumiliations.
Hewasasthoughtlessashewasunkind.AsonofPoseidon’s,attemptingtokidnaphisdaughter,madethewar-godunhappy,sothathekilledtheyouthWithouthesitation.Inretaliation,PoseidondraggedhimbeforeagroupofAthenianjudgesfortrial.ThecourtwasheldonahilloutsideAthens.Arespresentedhiscaseandwasdeclaredinnocent.ThehillwaseveraftercalledAreopagus,“thehillofAres”,andthejudgesreceivedthenamesofAreopagitae.
